Today comes something a bit different. This zine includes little anecdotes about a variety of potions, compiled by the fictional Miss Mead. While there is a dark side to many of the potions, this is much lighter and more humorous than my usual fare. I hope that’s okay!
I’m also cheating and counting it for the 30 Days of Fright Writing Challenge, prompt 1. It’s not very frightful, but it was just too convenient that I had a whole zine about magical elixirs with unintended results, which fit the prompt so well. I’ll link my other stories for that challenge so far at the end of this post.
I’m including a free PDF download of the whole zine, so you can read it in that form, or print your own copy to color and write in! Just make sure when you print from PDF that you choose “booklet,” so you can fold it up the correct way. (Message me if you have problems.)
Two more notes:
I made this as a coloring book zine and journal, hence the black and white line art. For this posting, I’ve also taken out the periodic lined pages, which are intended for the reader to write upon.
If you can’t see the whole post in your email, click “view entire message” in your email client. Since I’m posting the pages as images, the text is looking really small on mobile. Remember, you can also just read it in the Substack app or download the PDF.
*I learned several things from making this zine, including that you should number your pages (I did not and regret it every time the cats mess up the pages coming out of the printer and I have to re-order and fold them) and that you should use a font that is more accessible to everyone (I usually do now).
Which potion is your favorite?
Now, for the 30 Days of Fright Writing Challenge! I have posted these in the app only. And yes, I’m behind.
This is the Shrouded Grouse, and here you’ll find supernatural short stories and novellas, essays and musings, zines, and illustrations that explore the liminal spaces and moody places.

Moth to a Flame is my favorite! Love the bottle design and the story that goes with it! :)
